best baby playards

The “Tank” of all Play Yards, November 4, 2009

This is a really great play yard that is safe, strong and stable. I did a lot of research in search of a suitable “containment” area for my busy one year old and am really pleased with this choice. This thing is built super strong and I like that it does not have a weight limit, unlike my Graco Pack n’ Play’s 30lb limit. My son is now almost two and the Room 2 really does provide a large and safe play area for when I am trying to get that time in to clean up around the house and cook dinner. It is spacious enough to put several toddlers in it at the same time and because it is bigger my son seems to tolerate playing in it for longer periods of time. It is also very easy to set-up and collapse down since I mostly use it on the weekends. Yes, it is heavier than the Pack n’ Play, but I also know I will get several more years of use out of this play yard with a rough and tumble growing boy. So, keep the Pack n’ Play for portability and trips out to grandma’s house, but get the Joovy Room 2 for every day use in and around the house.

Big and Smelly, July 23, 2010

We’ve owed our Joovy for over 3 months now and it has been a sturdy and portable playyard. It packs easily in the carrying case and is fairly easy to set up and use. The only drawback has been the rotten smell of the fabric as soon as it was taken out of the packaging, (which smells similar to dried vomit in my opinion). After 3 months of “airing out” I had hoped that the smell would go away but it persistently lingers. Overall this is a decent product but I recommend that it be used outdoors or throughly cleaned with soap and water before use.

As as amendment to my previous statement, I would like to say that I contacted Joovy Customer Service through their website and notified them about the smell of the play yard. Joovy was proactive and helpful in correcting this mishap and sent me a replacement product that didn’t smell. Thank You Joovy!

overall i highly recommend this product. my 9 month old plays in this giving me a safe opportunity to run down & do laundry or out to get the mail. she even fell asleep playing in it once! it is large and the black color makes it less obtrusive sitting in our dining room. my only warning is that the first few times i set it up and took it down, it was very difficult. there is a trick to it, unlike its cousin the Pack N Play which is so easy. if you pull the bars way up, almost overextending, and then click or unclick them, you will have more success. also make sure the folding bars on the underside are inside the legs when you do the final fold.

Absolute Junk, January 31, 2011

I bought this for my girls (10 months and 22 months). The package was missing a piece, the walls are flimsy and the plastic will bend and bow at the slightest pressure put on them by a child weighing less than 30 lbs. The knobs do not stay tight, so the play yard is always being shifted and moved around, and it loses is hexagonal shape (which is dangerous, because if the walls move too close together without the support of angled corners, it will tip over). The gate opens at the slightest touch because the latch is too short, which my daughter (not yet two) has figured out. Both girls can also move the entire play yard around to wherever they like because the plastic is so lightweight it poses no obstacle whatsoever. My 22-month-old can also lift the bottom of the play yard up, and crawl out. How wonderful!

The missing piece is a one of the eleven knobs that are supposed to secure the play yard in place. Instead of going through the hassle of returning it (exchanging would be more of a pain because K-Mart got one of these in the last six months and I bought it), I used a small piece of rope tied through the joint to keep it together. Even if I had the part, (which I will try to get directly from the company), given the fact that none of the other knobs stay tight, I don’t see it making a big difference. Looking at the images, it may be possible there is no missing piece, if this is the case, then there are only a small set of teeth on the bottom (along with the unreliable latch on top) holding the “gate” in the closed position. This is a very weak link, one girl (22 mos) intentionally pulled it apart and crawled out. The other (10 mo) rolled and fell into the corner of the gate and the bottom corner popped right open. We’re talking about an 18 pound baby opening this thing with her weight alone, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I can tell you with certainty, the two girls in the image posted for this product would have this thing all over the place and completely out of shape inside of five minutes.

This not what I expected having dropped the on this thing (not at all worth the price, mind), with all the flaws I have encountered, this play yard not only fails to do what it is designed to do, it is also poses certain dangers to children.

Boo, Summer brand! This will be the last item I buy from a generic company. Shame on you for selling such a piece of crap. DO NOT buy this play yard unless you enjoy throwing away your hard-earned money and like posing dangers to your children. Purchase a play yard from a more reputable company.

I bought this play yard to take camping to confine my 2 10 pound dogs. It will work for that. It’s okay, but I probably wouldn’t have picked it if I saw it in person before I bought it. This one was priced a bit high for the quality. If you are looking for a play yard for your kids I would get something better. This one is very light weight and flimsy. It’s a bit too light weight. When my daughter was small I had a different play yard – a super play yard – with taller panels and a much heavier weight plastic. I liked that one much better.

This play yard is ok. I use it for my rabbit so it works great for my purposes but i don’t think it would be sturdy enough to use for a child/baby.
